Is This Man Serious? Jud Lake and Ellen White

A PRACTICAL THEOLOGIAN

Dr. Judson Lake is a distinguished theology professor at one of our Adventist universities. In addition to his D.Min. degree from the Reformed Theological Seminary, he took a Th.D. in Practical Theology (University of South Africa (2003)) http://personal.southern.edu/~jslake/

WITH A TENDER HEART

Our Adventist brother Lake has a keen sense of fairness, and it concerns him to see "Ellen G. White under attack". (Jud Lake, Ellen White Summit 2005 #3, 12 Nov 2005, http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2730658588415094914, minute 1)

It seems there are some critics, and "They are burned. They are mad. They are relentless. They are ferocious." (Lake, supra)

CHECK THOSE FANGS

Its not just a matter of looking mad. No, these critics are "lashing back at the church, and at Ellen G. White." (Lake, supra)

CONTROLLING THE FLOW OF INFORMATION

Its that internet business again. Back in the old days, books critical of the church could be indexed.

"The Index of Prohibited Books, or simply "Index", is used in a restricted sense to signify the exact list or catalogue of books, the reading of which was once forbidden to Catholics by the highest ecclesiastical authority." (Hilgers, J. (1910). Index of Prohibited Books. In The Catholic Encyclopedia. New York: Robert Appleton Company)

"A book was prohibited or put on the Index by decree of the Sacred Congregation of the Roman Inquisition, of the Sacred Office". (id.) The inquisition was in charge of suppressing those renegades. Then as now.

WITH RELISH

If Mother Rome was riding a high wave of power, punitive measures didn't just stop at indexing the books! The church had their ways and means of silencing heretics (critics).

STREET PREACHING (1529 - ca. 1995)

"At the stake, Berquin endeavored to address a few words to the people; but the monks, fearing the result, began to shout, and the soldiers to clash their arms, and their clamor drowned the martyr's voice." (Ellen G. White, The Great Controversy, p 218)

Back in the good old days, the Adventist flock was spoon-fed with news and information from quality journals like the Review, Southern Tidings, etc. Branch types would show up at campmeetings and stand on public sidewalks and try to hand out their literature. But they didn't make much headway. Oh, they tried with cassette-tape informational campaigns, but none of this bothered the great remnant church.

WEBQUAKE

But then the earthquake came. "Go to the web, google search engine, you type in Ellen G. White, and fortunately in recent uh in recent years you will get the official White Estate at the top." (Lake, supra)

Well, top of the list is nice, but anywhere on page 1 of the search results is just fine. If its a really popular topic, a placing on page 2 or 3 is not bad. The word still gets around.

"You will find a host of extremely negative websites." (Lake, supra) And for a church with the time-honored Catholic mentality:

"In the end it is -- in good catholic fashion -- the church that controls the Scripture and not vice versa." Dr. Ekkehardt Mueller (Adventist Biblical Research Institute)
citation

these "negative websites" are quite an irritant. Put simply, its bad for business.

PROBING HERETICAL PSYCHOLOGY

And so the research professor of practical theology has studied the "ferocious" mad critics. What makes them tick?

APPALLING CASE OF ABUSE

"This misunderstanding of Ellen White's writings, the abuse of those writings has produced many of the critics of Seventh-day Adventism today." (Lake, supra, minutes 0 - 1)

There will always be unpractical people out there. Those folks who need a crew of five to screw in a light bulb.

But not Dr. Lake! He's into practical theology. In an apparent effort to soothe the ruffled feathers of those critics, Dr. Lake is toning down the "misunderstandings" of Ellen White's writings.

ABUSE OF WRITINGS -- OK TO TALK ABOUT THEM, BUT DON'T LIVE IT

Believe it or not, there are some people out there -- fanatics -- who actually believe that White's books should not just be read, but that the teachings should be implemented in daily life.

Well, this abuse had to stop!

And at Dr. Lake's academic home, it has!

We consider this gem of inspiration from the pen of Sister Ellen White:

"A view of things was presented before me in which the students were playing games of tennis and cricket. Then I was given instruction regarding the character of these amusements. They were presented to me as a species of idolatry, like the idols of the nations." (Ellen White, Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 350)

Those fanatics actually believe what this says, and stay away from tennis (and idols). And worse (from the 7th day Papist perspective), they even try to share these truths with others.

After his careful researches, Dr. Lake has spoken out "relating to the critics of Ellen White. Everyone of these people were once among us -- the present-day critics -- and they were burned by a "Sister White says". (audience laughter) This legalistic theme that Dr. Newborn enunciated for us, this misunderstanding of Ellen White's writings, this abuse of those writings has produced many of the critics of Seventh-day Adventism today. They come right out of that environment. They are burned. They are mad. They are relentless. They are ferocious. And lashing back at the church, and at Ellen G. White." (Lake, supra, minutes 0 - 1)

Needless to say, Dr. Lake's Adventist University is taking no chances with the youth of today!!

What? Let those college students get a legalistic impression of Sister White and the church?

NO CHANCE OF IT!

And so you won't see "Sister White says" being practiced on Dr. Lake's campus.

Sure you can read plenty of flowery words from Dr. Lake about Sister White and her ministry:

"Seventh-day Adventists highly value the prophetic ministry of Ellen G. White (1827-1915). For seventy years she provided counsel, guidance, exhortation, and encouragement to the growing SDA Church and left a legacy of writings still cherished today.

She was a person of great faith who loved the Lord Jesus Christ and honored the Bible as the Word of God. She exercised her prophetic gift with care and discretion, pointing all people to Christ for salvation, as beautifully exemplified in her classic work, Steps to Christ." (Jud Lake, Welcome, http://www.ellenwhiteanswers.org/)

But have no fear out there! Its just talk.

Really? You have seen the Ellen White citation on tennis, and the pictures of the tennis courts at Dr. Lake's institution.

"These people draw near to me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips; but their heart is far from me." (Matthew 15:8, World English Bible)

When God's Servants Rebuke Sin

Dear Brother Workentine,

Your ministry meets a real need. We love the church, and we always have. But when we were growing up, it still meant something special to be an Adventist. It seems that now, the church is doing all it can to be like the world – from ecumenism to ditching the health reform message.

We’d like to share this inspired thought with you:

"In every generation God has sent His servants to rebuke sin, both in the world and in the church. But the people desire smooth things spoken to them, and the pure, unvarnished truth is not acceptable. Many reformers, in entering upon their work, determined to exercise great prudence in attacking the sins of the church and the nation. They hoped, by the example of a pure Christian life, to lead the people back to the doctrines of the Bible. But the Spirit of God came upon them as it came upon Elijah, moving him to rebuke the sins of a wicked king and an apostate people; they could not refrain from preaching the plain utterances of the Bible-- doctrines which they had been reluctant to present. They were impelled to zealously declare the truth and the danger which threatened souls. The words which the Lord gave them they uttered, fearless of consequences, and the people were compelled to hear the warning." (Ellen White, The Great Controversy, p. 606)

The Southern Adventist Evangelistic Process

EVANGELISM EXPERT

Pastor Mark Finley is a top Adventist evangelist. He is:

"the former speaker/director of It Is Written (from 1991–2004), where he traveled around the world as a televangelist, and spoke on the weekly television show It Is Written. He was the first Seventh-day Adventist pastor to do a satellite evangelistic series. He currently serves as one vice-president out of nine for the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and has written over 70 published books.

Evangelism is where Finley made his mark on the world, presenting more than 150 evangelistic meeting series around the globe in about 80 countries with resulting baptisms numbering in the thousands." (Mark Finley, Wikipedia)
"Evangelism is not an event; it is a process. This is an opportunity to model what can happen in a significant metropolitan area by networking with different ethnic groups, churches, institutions, lay members, and pastors. Working with Southern Adventist University affords us unique resources to model evangelism." (Mark Finley cited in Interview with Mark Finley: Evangelism as a Process, Reaching Out - Journal of the Southern Adventist University School of Religion, Spring 2006)
SOUTHERN ADVENTIST UNIVERSITY - A LIGHT TO THE COMMUNITY

Brother Finley has enjoyed the privilege of working with Southern Adventist University in evangelism.

THE PROCESS OF EVANGELISM

"The process includes training for lay Bible instructors, prayer warriors, health ministry teams, literature teams, compiling of interest lists, coordinating with local pastors, and distributing Bible enrollment cards." (Mark Finley cited in Interview with Mark Finley: Evangelism as a Process, Reaching Out - Journal of the Southern Adventist University School of Religion, Spring 2006)

HELP STAYING AWAKE

Even prayer warriors can get tired, especially when engaged in an all-night prayer vigil.

But not to worry!

Southern Adventist University has "unique resources to model evangelism". (Finley, supra)

EVANGELISM RESOURCE CENTER

The caffeine stocks can be had by visiting the university-owned and operated Village Market food shop. Note the bright-red cola vending machine in the picture at right.

JUST FOR STUDENTS?

Now you might say, Those cola machines are just for students, and have nothing in the world do with the Adventist health ministry to the community!

OFFICIAL UNIVERSITY POSITION

Dr. Judson Lake instructs future ministers in the "art of preaching" at Southern Adventist.

"If you knew anything beyond what you read in articles, you'd know that the VM area is for the community and that very few Southern students actually drink the sodas (which are outside of the VM, not in it), and if you did a study in which you actually observed rather than post your vague inklings of what you think must be happening, you'd see that few students actually even drink the caffeine free alternatives." (Dr. Judson Lake, Website Comment, 22 November 2008)

We are nearing the end of time, and we want now, not to meet the world's tastes and practices, but to meet the mind of God; to see what saith the Scriptures, and then to walk according to the light which God has given us. (Ellen G. White, The Faith I Live By, p. 152)

Ah, a service to the community. Well, that just happens to fit the definition of "ministry": "The act of serving; ministration." http://www.answers.com/ministry

This unique Adventist ministry to the community certainly has to do with health: "Most soft drinks and coffee drinks have absolutely no nutritional value and are absolutely teeming with refined sugar and unnecessary sodium." (Summer Carr, Is caffeine bad for your health?, East Tennessean, 4 October 2005)

What kind of religion would operate a health ministry like this?

A UNIQUE FAITH ENVIRONMENT SUPPORTS THIS INNOVATIVE HEALTH MINISTRY

Pastor Finley talked about the unique evangelism resources at Southern Adventist. And he was right on target!

Sure Southern Adventist sells caffeinated sugar water to "the community", but not to worry. Its all a health ministry.

What would you call this kind of logic?

How about a "unique faith environment" (see exhibit above)!

MOST ADVENTIST STUDENTS KNOW BETTER

"
few Southern students actually drink the sodas" (Lake, supra)

After all, "
Sugar clogs the system. It hinders the working of the living machine." (Ellen G. White, Counsels on Diet and Foods, page 327) "Seventh-day Adventists highly value the prophetic ministry of Ellen G. White". (Dr. Judson Lake, Welcome, EllenWhiteAnswers.org)

SO WHO GETS THE BENEFITS OF THIS UNIQUE MINISTRY?

This special "health ministry" is "for the community" (Lake, supra)

ADVENTISTS OUT FRONT!

"The preaching that this world needs most is the sermon in shoes…” D. L. Moody

Evangelism is defined as " Zealous preaching and dissemination of the gospel, as through missionary work." http://www.answers.com/evangelism

Dr. Judson Lake is a specialist in the "art of preaching". His university is engaged in some very zealous preaching through its sermon in shoes:
The fact that his own life exemplified the truth he proclaimed, gave convincing power to his preaching. Here lies the power of truth. The unstudied, unconscious influence of a holy life is the most convincing sermon that can be given in favor of Christianity. Argument, even when unanswerable, may provoke only opposition; but a godly example has a power that it is impossible wholly to resist. (Ellen White, Acts of the Apostles, p. 511)
Sister White could have been talking about Judson Lake, but actually it was the Apostle Paul.

Its just wonderful when an Adventist university, by its course of conduct in health ministry, exemplifies the truth they proclaim!!!

We congratulate the Adventists on their innovative evangelistic
processes!!

OUR PIOUS ADVENTIST BROTHER BROOKS PRESENTS STRONG WORD FROM THE LORD

Brother C.D. Brooks presented in North Carolina on 17 May 2008. The program included a stirring rendition of the Coming Again song:

Jesus Is Coming Again

1. Lift up the trumpet, and loud let it ring: Jesus is coming again!
Cheer up, ye pilgrims, be joyful and sing; Jesus is coming again!

(Refrain)
Refrain: Coming again, coming again, Jesus is coming again!

The pilgrims got cheered up. After a fine sermon, a delicious meal created an atmosphere of high fellowship.

Jesus would be coming again "soon".

HOW ADVENTISTS RELATE TO THE WORD SOON

What does "soon" mean in Adventist circles? 100 years? 2000 years?

The Prophet Ellen White used this word. More than 100 years ago, she said the time would soon come when there would be no safety in using milk, cream, and butter. (Connie Kiefiuk, Did you say, pass the milk?, Faith on the Line, Winter 2006, pages 16-17).

SCIENCE CONFIRMS PROPHET WHITE: COW'S MILK NOT SAFE

According to science, that time has come:

"Heart disease

The most common cause of death in the United States is by heart attack, killing one person every 45 seconds. By reducing your consumption
of meat dairy products and eggs by 50%, you reduce your risk of a heart attack by 45%. By following a pure vegetarian diet (no animal products at all) you reduce your risk by 90%. Heart disease, the most common cause of death in the U.S., is strongly correlated with elevated levels of cholesterol, which is found only in animal products. There is a 12% rise in blood cholesterol from consuming one egg a day. There is a 24% rise in heart attack risk from 12% rise in blood cholesterol. The average egg contains 275mg of cholesterol. Red meat and chicken both contain the same amount of cholesterol--25mg per ounce. No dietary cholesterol intake is needed to support human health because the body makes its own.

There is no cholesterol whatsoever in any grain, legume, fruit, vegetable, nut, or seed." (The Many Reasons to be a Vegetarian, http://www.justeatveggies.com/reasons.htm)

ANDREWS THEOLOGIANS KNOW BETTER

But at Andrews University, the theologians take a different position. Please recall that Andrews is the home of the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary.

These distinguished scholars have carefully considered the writings of Sister White, and, of course, the various scientific studies on cholesterol.

And their conclusion?

Its all bunco!

The Seminary has given the nod to consumption of milk, and production of the same.

SCIENCE: DIETARY CHOLESTEROL IS A BURDEN TO THE BODY

Sure the eminent health scientist Dr. Hans Diehl takes a different position:

"The scientific verdict emerges that all excess fats and oils are a burden to the body. The less fat, oil, and grease, the better the human body performs."
Hans A. Diehl, Dr.H.Sc., M.P.H. (nutrition), director,
Lifestyle Medicine Institute, Loma Linda, California.
(Diehl Letter to editor, Ministry, April 1991, p. 2)

NOT IMPRESSED

But the Adventist theologians "know best".

PLENTY OF MILK FOR THESE PASTORS!

Andrews runs a full dairy (John Eby, You have to kiss a few pigs, Cassopolis Vigilant, 2 May 2007), ensuring that the future Adventist ministers have a good supply of fresh cow's milk.

This picture shows the clean and modern dairy at Andrews. This upstanding institution even offers an academic degree in Dairy Herd Management.

"In the U.S., the dairy business is huge - literally. Modern dairy operations manage herds of 15,000 cattle, and thanks to gains in technology and research, milk production per cow is rising exponentially." (About Dairy Herd Management, www.andrews.edu/cot/dairy/about/index.html)

ADVENTIST RESPONSE TO CHOLESTEROL DANGERS

Cholesterol consumption has been linked to heart disease. So what do the Adventists do?

They expand production exponentially!

On 7 April 2008, the Fourth Annual "Ellen White and Current Issues" Symposium was conducted at Andrews. Under sponsorship of the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, the attendees heard a presentation by Don McMahon, entitled "The Nature of Inspiration in the Health Writings of Ellen White".

THE EXPERTS GOT TOGETHER

For example, Dr. Angel Rodriguez, Th.D., Director of the Biblical Research Institute at the world headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist church was on the program.

"ELLEN WHITE GOT IT WRONG"

These top Adventist scholars got together and must have decided Sister White was wrong about her prediction on dairy products. After all, the dairy is still in production!

We congratulate the religious scholars at Andrews on their careful study of the writings of Sister White.

After all, the motto at Andrews is "Seek knowledge. Affirm faith. Change the world." http://www.andrews.edu/about/index.html

And they are changing the world. One cow at a time.
